If you are in the market for a new garage door, there are many different types you can choose from. Some of them are more traditional than others and you need to consider the setup of your garage before you choose.
Sectional Garage Doors
One of the most common types of garage doors is sectional doors. These doors are made with a number of panels connected to each other with hinges. On the end of each panel are wheels that sit in a track on either side of the door inside the garage.
As the doors open and close, the wheels run along the track. The hinges connecting the panels allow the door to navigate the curved section of track before the door rests at the top of the garage. These doors are generally electric and made from light metals such as steel.
Roll-Up Garage Doors
If you are looking for something a bit more industrial in nature, this is the type of door for you. These doors are generally found in commercial buildings as they are made for heavy usage. The heavy-duty usage design does increase the overall costs of these garage doors.
The door itself is made up of thin steel slats connected to a coil that runs on the tracks on either side of the door. As the door is opened, the slats roll around a drum located above the garage door opening. These doors can be electric or manual depending on needs and budget.
Tilt-Up Garage Doors
There are two models of tilt-up garage doors that you can choose from. The first is the canopy door and the second is the retractable doors. Both models are more traditional residential doors.
The canopy of a side hinged garage door and a solid garage door are very similar in design. As the door is opened, the hinges tilt it up and it forms a canopy extending past the opening of the garage. The pivoting hinge mechanism will be housed inside the garage on either side of the door.
The retractable doors have a similar hinge system, but the door rests in the garage instead of outside it. To do this, there is usually a track attached to the top of the garage door. These doors are sometimes considered harder to operate than other styles. These are typically manual but some come in an automatic variant which can really aid in the effort required.
